Sunday, November 16, 2014: Our flight stopped in Dakar, Senegal, just before dawn to refuel and swap out some passengers. We were parked next to a USAF C-17 Globemaster III that was in the final stages of loading cargo.
Dakar's airport is called Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport.
As we taxied for departure, we could see the twin hills known as Collines des Mamelles. On the left is the ...
... 49-meter-high African Renaissance Monument. Completed in April 2010, it is the tallest statue in Africa.
Here's a cemetary with the city of Dakar behind it.
Dakar is on a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Just 15 minutes after take-off, we were over the Saloum River basin.
Seven or so hours later, we were getting close to ...
... Johannesburg, South Africa.
Most of the homes and the neighborhoods were surrounded by tall, solid fences.
This should have been a photo of the many, many rabbits we saw along the grasses along the taxiway. Instead, it's just a placeholder to remind us that there were rabbits. Oh, yes, many rabbits.
S During our layover in Johannesburg, we exchanged our US dollars for South African rand and got this photo of a Coca-Cola vending machine, featuring Stoney Ginger Beer. We had sampled the Tanzanian version, Stoney Tangawizi, a year earlier at Coca-Cola World in Atlanta.
We made it to our final destination of Cape Town shortly before 10:00 PM, where we were met by our driver and taken to ...
... Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge. Here's our pretty hotel room, ...
... and another view.
The glass-walled bathroom ...
... was beautiful and modern.
The evening view from our room featured the harbor to our left.

Berthed overnight was Holland America's ms Rotterdam, which was ending a 49-day cruise from the Netherlands. We were on the ms Rotterdam in 2007 for a Black Sea/Mediterranean cruise.
