Saturday, October 29, 2011: We arrived at Arrecife on the island of Lanzarote, an apparently barren island dotted with dozens of volcano cones.

Our shore excursion was a transfer to the resort town of Puerto del Carmen.
Here's some interesting architecture -- a bright blue IKEA.
There's a volcano, ...
... and there are some, ...
... and there are some more. The palm trees in these shots aren't native to the island, because there are no natural water sources anywhere on the island.
The bus dropped us off in front of Playa Grande beach around 10:30.
Here's the view to the left.
And down on the beach, here's the view to the right.
We chose two fantastic beach loungers with umbrella and paid a nice man for the privilege.
We went to the ocean to see what our level of commitment would be.
We decided that our commitment would be ankle-deep and that's all. Dreams of snorkeling in tropical waters faded in an ice-cold instant.
But hey, it's the ocean and we don't have one of those back home in Indiana.
So, back to the endless rows of beach chairs, ...
... where we spent several hours reading and relaxing.
Some day, we will try parasailing too. We're saving it for Mexico.
Around 1:00, our new friends Jay and Theresa from Seattle met us on the beach and we went out for lunch at a Spanish restaurant the tour guide had recommended to Jay. Debbie finally got the octopus she wanted and it was beautifully plated.
We had a great time with them and somehow managed to not take a photo of them, but did get a shot of the Cruzan Honey Rum shots we had after the meal was finished, courtesy of the restaurant.
We got a photo as we were leaving, so here's a glimpse of Jay on the left and our waiter clearing our table.
Puerto del Carmen is definitely a resort town, lined with souvenir shops and restaurants, ...
... with the occasional British-Scandinavian Klinik.
There are condos and rental properties everywhere, ...
... all painted in tasteful shades of white.
We were back on the ship by early afternoon, ...

... and off on our journey to Morocco the next day.
