Sunday, July 7, 2013: We had spent the night in Hillsville, Virginia, not far from Galax where one of Orchard Software's clients is located..
We drove through the beautiful Virginia countryside ...
... with low-hanging clouds and charming old buildings.
Tunnel!
More cool clouds.
"Welcome to West Virginia - Wild and Wonderful."
Each oasis on the West Virginia turnpike welcomed us as well.
It was raining nearly our entire time in West Virginia, ...
... and it was clear that it had been raining here quite a bit recently.
You're welcome, West Virginia. It's been a pleasure.
Our little friend, Orchy, had never been to West Virginia before, so we headed toward the beautiful state capitol building to get a picture of him. As we arrived, the rain stopped, and the sun came out long enough to light up the golden dome.
Here's Orchy!
Near the capitol stands this monument to West Virginia coal miners.
Near the Ohio-West Virginia border, we crossed the Kanawha River into ...
... Historic Point Pleasant, hoping to find an open non-chain restaurant.
We failed in our mission but we did encounter this monument to the Mothman of the Mothman Prophecies legend, book, and movie, which originated in this area.
Here's a view of the mighty Ohio River from Point Pleasant.
"Welcome to Ohio - So much to Discover!"
We stopped at Captain D's on the Ohio side of the river. If we have to choose from the available chain restaurants, we'll at least choose the chain that doesn't have a location near our home.
Here's Dayton! Although Tom was raised here, we very rarely see the actual city of Dayton since we always stop at his mother's house in Englewood. We stopped to visit her for a while and have some dessert, and Tom opened birthday presents from her.
Back on the road once again, we were happy to see this sign. "Welcome to Indiana - Crossroads of America - Lincoln's Boyhood Home."

But we made a slight detour on the way to our house because Debbie had learned via her phone that there is a restaurant in Indianapolis that serves fried okra: Church's Fried Chicken. So we had one last Southern-themed meal before our vacation came to an end.

** THE END **
