4D Summit: [Schaumburg 1999] [San Diego 2000] [Vancouver 2002] [Santa Fe 2003] [New Orleans 2004] [San Francisco 2005] [Memphis 2007] [Long Beach 2008] [Atlanta 2009] [San Diego 2010] [Boston 2011] [San Jose 2012] [Las Vegas 2013] [San Antonio 2014] [Portland 2016] [Washington DC 2018]

Here is a collection of photos from the 4D Summit in San Antonio, October 27 - 30, 2014.

Monday, October 27, 2014: The 2014 Summit was held at the Marriott Riverwalk. I was lucky enough to get a room on the 19th floor overlooking one end of the River Walk.
At registration, we received an adorable boot-shaped thumb drive containing conference materials.
The lobby was the official meeting location for the Orchard crew. I ran into old friends Ant, Christian, and Mike (not pictured) while waiting for Nick, Alycia, and Zac to join Adam, Weston, and me.
The Orchard Six assembled and headed out for some sightseeing. That's the Marriott in the distance on the left.
Are you ready? Here it is! The Alamo! Adam is amused.
The reports are true that the Alamo is situated right in the middle of the city. Turn your head to the left while facing the Alamo and you'll be looking at this.
Here's the Alamo up close. No photos are allowed inside the building itself, ...
... but we were able to photograph the grounds, including this ancient tree ...
... and the building that houses the gift shop.
After leaving, we crossed the street to take this scenic path to the River Walk.
Pretty, huh?
We headed to the famous Casa Rio restaurant ...
... for margaritas ...
... and some delicious Tex-Mex. Behold the Casa Rio Deluxe Dinner!
Here's the Orchard crew (Alycia, Nick, Weston, Adam, and Zac) minus the photographer.
After dinner, we went up to street level to get this shot, which is the most heavily photographed shot of the River Walk. Just a month earlier, my Aunt Mary had sent me a post card with this very scene on it. Truth.
After returning to the hotel, I ran into Mike B. who talked me into a visit to Growler Station 1221. A brief cab ride brought us to a bar with outdoor seating, a hot dog food truck, ...
... and an excellent list of beers on tap.
Mike closely examined the selection of bottled beers. See how the glow of the cooler lights up the child-like glee on his face?
I went with a sampler, as usual. From left to right: Southern Tier Punking, SKA Autumnal Mole Stout, Lagunitas Imperial Stout, and Ace Pineapple Cider. All four were delicious but the Punking and Pineapple Cider were particularly outstanding.
It was a pleasant half-hour walk back to the hotel in the perfect San Antonio night air. Then I enjoyed some time in my room fixing a bug in my code. Yes, it's true. Sometimes even I have bugs in my code.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Welcome to the 4D Summit! Check out the excellent Orchard Software logo on the welcome slide.
Our group of six took up residence on one side of the hall, then I was directed to the reserved seats in the second row. Reserved seat? Don't mind if I do! A big thanks to Tracy for hooking me up with a can of Diet Coke too.
The opening keynote included the Lyle-and-JPR show, ...
... a vintage copy of 4D, ...
... Dave and Eric, ...
... Thomas, ...
... Caroline, ...
... and some onscreen cameos by the 4D development staff.
Jim gave a touching tribute to the late great Walt Nelson (the pretty one -- or was he the smart one?).
After the keynote, I attended presentations by JPR, Justin, Roland, ...
... Caroline and Nicolas.
After a full day of sessions, we headed to the welcome reception, sponsored by our very own Orchard Software! Of course, we had to get a photo with one of the signs.
On a screen in one corner played a special 30th anniversary movie featuring many, many photos from this very website. (Permission to use my photos had not only been granted, but encouraged.)
Meanwhile, I set out to gather more photos. Here are Sheriff Ant and Deputy Mike on the patio just outside the reception room.
Not wanting to miss an opportunity, Brian and I posed for our annual photo in more of a state of sobriety than usual.
It's always a great time when Tamara's at the Summit!
There were Shiner Bocks as far as the eye could see.
Party scene #1.
Party scene #2.
Party scene #3.
Time for a duck lips portrait. Wayne was generous enough to share his pink cowboy hat with Tom, ...
... then me.
This young gentleman shares the same last name as Justin, which makes him Tamara's nephew-in-law if my math is correct. His name is James, Jim, or Jimmy, depending on who is calling him.
With the welcome reception held right on the banks of the River Walk, we enjoyed more than one serenade from bands on boats passing by.
After the reception, it was time for the OEM dinner, so we gathered in the lobby and then walked along the River Walk to the Fig Tree Restaurant, located in the Dashiell House.
It was the perfect evening for an outdoor reception ...
... followed by a dinner on the terrace next to the river. My dinner companions were Jim, the good folks from Label Traxx, and a nice couple from Sweden.
On the walk back, I got a river-level photo of Casa Rio.

Wednesday, October 29, 2014: Good morning, San Antonio! This was the view looking down from my balcony.
Lyle hosted another keynote, which Wayne helpfully tweeted from the left side of the room.
Who was at Sergiy's session?
Zac, Adam, and I were.
Next, it was time for me to attend the OEM meeting, followed by an unphotographed meeting with some excellent 4D people, ...
... and then it was back to the regular sessions, where I enjoyed another great presentation by Roland.
At the wrap-up session, there was a quick group portrait of the 4D staff, ...
... followed by a Q&A session with Laurent E., Thomas, Laurent R., Eric, and Lyle.
We piled onto buses for the hour-long trip to the Summit party north of town.
The 30th Anniversary video kept us entertained for the first half hour of the drive. Look how adorable Laurent was back in 1991!
We arrived at Knibbe Ranch, fortified ourselves with Shiner Bock beer, and headed outside to enjoy the evening.
Here are some of my very favorite people: Brian, Christian, Tom, and Mike.
Roland stopped by to say "Bonjour" and raise a glass with us.
The International Space Station also came by for a visit. In a miracle of modern technology, I actually heard the alarm on my phone reminding me to look for it. There's a first time for everything, folks.
I got a photo of David similar to the one I took of him in 2007.
Dinner was a full Texas-style buffet with steak, chicken, corn, and all manner of tastiness.
Here's the Orchard table, which was one of many in the ...
... dining and entertainment hall.
There were line dancing lessons up front by the band, ...
... while a large screen next to the stage displayed a slide show of all of my favorite photos from years past. This gem of Brian and me is from 2009.
A drawing was held for several door prizes and the lucky winners were brought up on stage to receive their loot.
Here are Dave, Jim, Omid, and Omid's hat.
The crowd was summoned to the arena outside for a small rodeo.
I joined the Brit/Aussie/Kiwi contingent on one of the bleachers. Look! Justin was one of the door prize winners!
The rodeo started with a color guard, followed by ...
... bronco riding, a comedian who made a cowboy hat explode, and barrel racing.
Diana and I recreated our famous photo from 2002 when we met at the Summit in Vancouver.
Lyle walked around and gathered video of the crowd.
It was nice to catch up with the Other Eric (real name: Derek) after meeting him in Las Vegas last year. Being from Oklahoma, this was not his first rodeo.
Nephew and uncle.
Tom brought all of his handsome for this photo.
Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
When the rodeo ended, a group of attendees were found glued to the television screen where the final game of the World Series was being shown. The 4D US employees were pleased that the Giants were victorious.

Thursday, October 30, 2014: On Thursday morning, it was time to head back home the way we came -- via the always lovely DFW airport.
