Saturday, August 27, 2022: Tom and Debbie were up for an hour or so when Doug joined us at the kitchen table. He and Tom talked about various electronic projects, tools, development environments, etc. Geek stuff.
Doug brought out some of his favorite Adafruit projects including this display that was programmed to show a single eyeball looking around, ...
... and this Monster Mask project that was a collaboration between Digi-Key and Adafruit.
Doug demostrated just how creepy it looked on, and said that he had put it together in time to wear it while handing out candy on Halloween last year.
This Adafruit MagTag e-ink display was part of Adabox 17, and came with a magnetic mount so that you can stick it to your refrigerator. The sample projects for this kit include a weather station, a kitchen timer, and various progress displays.
Debbie and Doug spent time catching up and talking about their childhood, working together at Intran, Macalester College, and many other topics.
Doug brought out some memorabilia from their high school, Highland Park Senior High, and some souvenirs from their mom's job as a librarian at Augsburg College. These included a box of used card catalog cards that their mother used to bring home from her job as a librarian to use as note paper around the house.
The collectible Debbie bobblehead from Orchard was prominently displayed in one of Doug's cabinets in his office. Still mint-in-box, of course. Debbie was pleased to see that Doug loved labeling his storage boxes as much as his sister does and their parents did.
We admired both the solar roof on the house across the street, as well as the Tesla Model 3 in the driveway.
Shortly after 2 PM we headed back to Everett to Lyndsay's parents home for Stewart and Lyndsay's engagement party.
Check out the glass sculptures next the walkway.
As we entered the house and came up the stairs to the main level, we were immediately struck by this impressive wine rack. It looked like a periodic table, with gaps where expected wines would go once they had been discovered.
The large picture window on the main floor looked out over a beautiful patio and garden, and had a magnificent view of Possession Sound.
The lower floor was all set up for the party, ...
... with a selection of pastries, fruit, cupcakes, and macarons on the dessert table.
The champagne bottles had customized labels to commemorate the special day.
Lyndsay's father, John, is an automotive designer, and his workshop contained a fascinating array of tools and gadgets. Someone's shoe had broken right before the party and was actively being repaired.
We were drawn to this cool print of the 1998 Volkswagen Beetle, known as the "New Beetle."
That's Lyndsay's dad on the right side at the rear of the Beetle. It turns out he was one of the designers when he worked for Volkswagen. How cool is that?
Lyndsay's mom, Lisa, has her studio on the lower floor as well.
She designs costumes for competitive dancers, and the room was filled with sketches, completed costumes, storage boxes of fabric, and sewing machines.
Next to Lisa's studio was John's office: a combination sitting area, office, and museum.
There were bookcases with a mix of things he had designed, things he collected, and various machined parts that were sentimental to him.
Debbie was absolutely taken by these stainless steel triangular scissors.
There were two LEGO builds on the wall, both of cars from companies John had designed for. The bottom model is a Lamborghini Sian that Tom had been eyeing in the LEGO Stores we had been visiting. John contributed to the design of the carbon fiber body panels for Lamborghini.
We made our way out to the patio, ...
... and enjoyed the perfect weather outside. You couldn't have asked for a prettier day in Seattle.
We admired all of the flowers that Lyndsay and her mom had selected for the party. There were bunches of green grapes that came from the grapevines growing on their arbor.
A rabbit hopped through the garden to check everyone out.
John joined us on the patio for a drink. Tom immediately developed a huge man-crush.
Lyndsay's sister Leila was the official photographer for the day, ...
... capturing photos of Lyndsay and Stewart with Stewart's family, ...
... with both Stewart's and Lyndsay's families, ...
... and with us.
Looking out over their fence, you could see the southeastern end of Whidbey Island.
Did we mention that there was dessert?
Lyndsay came out to join us.
Doesn't she look beautiful?
John was taking Polaroid pictures, ...
... with a refurbished Polaroid Land Camera that looked brand new.
Blaze, Brembo, and Bentley (Lyndsay's parents' dog), were released from captivity in the house and joined the party outside.
As the sun went down and it started to cool off, John turned on the propane heater built into the patio table so that we could continue to enjoy the outdoors.
Look at that sky. Just a perfect day.
As dusk turned to full darkness, we decided it was probably time to go.
Tom took one last look at this windtunnel model that was in John's office, ...
... and we said our goodbyes, ...
... took several bags of popcorn party favors, ...
... and headed back to Doug and Susan's house for the night.
