Monday, August 29, 2022: We were up by 6 AM, and while Tom broke down the tent, ...
... Debbie took another look at the cool stuff on the gigantic trees in our camp.
A really close look. That dripping sap is so cool.
By 7:45 AM, we were driving past the Skookum Falls viewpoint, ...
... and entering Mount Rainier National Park.
We were here to see a Mather plaque, so it was only appropriate that we were driving on the Mather Memorial Parkway.
There was a break in the trees, and we could see Mount Rainier in the early morning sun.
As we gained elevation at Cayuse Pass, we were able to see Mount Adams a way off to the south.
We arrived at the Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station, ...
... and found one of Mount Rainier National Park's two s. In the larger image, just below the word "that" in the lower right corner of the plaque, you can see the scar from a bullet that ricocheted off the sign back in 2008.
Around the corner there was a parking area with a good view of Tipsoo Lake itself.
We continued east and south, through the Wenatchee National Forest, ...
... and rounded the corner into the full morning sun.
We left the forest behind and entered the desert landscape as we got nearer to Yakima.
Here's a cool neon sign for the Laredo Drive-in in Naches, Washington.
This is fruit tree country, and there were stacks and stacks of empty fruit containers in parking lots and storage areas along the road.
We love seeing signs that name a place the something of somewhere else. Like "The Venice of the North" or "The Paris of the Southwest" or, in this case, "The Palm Springs of Washington."
Here's another view of lovely Mount Adams.
We passed a truck carrying crates from the Chelan Fruit company, which we had driven by last year on a trip out west.
Our route just happened to take us through Prosser, Washington, which means, ...
... we get to stop at Chukar Cherries!
We headed into the gift shop expecting to spend an outrageous amount on chocolate-covered cherries, ...
... and that's exactly what happened. When we were out here last year, we discovered that they sell the bits and pieces of cherry candies that aren't quite good enough for their regular products in an assortment that they call Cherry Bombs. Since they only sell them at their gift shop in Prosser and can't be purchased online, we really had no choice except to load up on them while we were here. Debbie bought two boxes of Cherry Bombs, which is 12 bags, ...
... along with a bottle of Chocolate Cherry Dessert Sauce and a bottle of Cherries Jubilee Dessert Sauce, and since we spent so much, they threw in a bag of Pa Chukar's Buckwheat Pancake Mix.
We saw one more horse statue to add to our collection from the last time we were here, ...
... and we were back on the road, headed to ...
... Oregon. We had counted up the number of states that we had driven to in our van, Septimus, and we discovered that after this trip, there was only going to be one in the contiguous 48 that was missing: Oregon. We knew that we had to change up our route to make sure we made it here so that we would have driven to all that can be driven to. Well, except Alaska, and we are still talking about that trip.
We like to do photo safaris, and last year we started collecting Adopt-a-Highway signs. The collection is getting close to complete.
Our route took us through the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, ...
... past farmlands ...
... and a cement plant.
We got a little nostalgic as we passed the exit for Farewell Bend State Park where we had stayed last year.
That's the Snake River, which means ...
... that we are crossing into Idaho!
This is the Boise Idaho Temple. You can always tell which ones are the Mormon churches, can't you?
We had booked a campsite at Macks Creek Park, but it was brutally hot outside and the forecast was for temperatures in the upper 80s all night long. Debbie booked a room at the Inn America near the Boise Airport, and we enjoyed air conditioned comfort and a nice shower instead.
