Day 10 - Drive Home |
Sunday, November 24, 2019: Shortly before 5:00 AM, Debbie got up to get a photo of New Orleans as we were approaching the dock. |
|
Carnival Glory must have been behind us on the river because it was not yet in port.
An hour later, we were having breakfast on the port side of the Garden Cafe ...
... so we could see the lovely dawn outside.
New Orleans was just starting to wake up, ...
... while the dock was busy with activity.
As the ship cam showed, Carnival Glory had now joined us.
Nineteen days later, that ship would run into Carnival Legend in Cozumel and would look pretty banged up.
We got downstairs with our luggage by 6:25 AM, but the line to disembark had already formed.
We were thrilled to be moving 15 minutes later.
The sun was starting to peek up as we crossed the gangway back onto dry land.
We headed to our van, loaded up our luggage, ...
... and were on our way by 7:00 AM.
Tom snapped a picture of the mileage display showing how much he had driven on the way here. This day would be shorter - only 840 miles.
Attempts to get a good shot of this interesting artwork near the pier ended in failure. Believe it or not, this is the best one.
We passed the two stadiums on our way out of town.
Buh-bye, New Orleans! | |
Our route out of town was a little more direct than the one we took to get here. It took us across ...
... Lake Pontchartrain again, ...
... but this time on a much shorter bridge.
Debbie had looked for statue collections along our route and stopped when she found out that Slidell, Louisiana had a set of pelican statues. We scoped out a route that would take us past as many as possible in the shortest amount of time. Here's the first one we found, ...
... and another one, ...
... and another one, ...
... and another one, ...
... and another one, ...
... and another one, ...
... and this one. Really, Hooters?
We passed the exit for Stennis Space Center just as we crossed the Mississippi border. It's hard to believe we passed up an opportunity to visit a space center, but we had been here already long ago.
Welcome to Mississippi, birthplace of America's music.
You have to love a store called Dirt Cheap. All the marketing is in the name.
Welcome to Sweet Home Alabama.
As we got near Tuscaloosa, we were beginning to realize that we were in Roll Tide territory.
Numerous billboards referenced University of Alabama. This Krystal billboard was slightly more subtle and just said, "Championship Food" in the middle.
We ended up at that very Krystal, but not because of the billboard. Inside the restaurant, there was 'Bama signage everywhere.
There's Huntsville, Alabama.
We crossed over the Tennessee River, which we now know empties into the Ohio River, which merges with the Mississippi River. Knowledge is power.
It's always fun to see a rocket by the side of the road.
This one is located at the Alabama Welcome Center.
Tennessee Welcomes You
Pretty Tennessee scenery.
It was 3:00 PM when we blew through Nashville.
There were fireworks at the Nissan stadium as we drove by, no doubt to welcome us.
Top Golfs are taking over the world.
We made the tiniest side trip to Red River Antique Mall near the Kentucky border ...
... to see this pink elephant statue. This had been the year of pink elephants, so it was nice to add one more to the list.
Somewhere south of Bowling Green, Kentucky are the nicest restrooms on I-65. We should really visit there someday.
There's the Corvette Museum.
We spotted this camper as we flew by. A half year earlier, we saw Landscape Arch in person.
We barely slowed down for dinner.
The Louisville bridge looked so pretty all lit up.
We're pretty sure this sign was welcoming us back home to Indiana, but who can really tell?
Twelve hours and 20 minutes after leaving New Orleans, we were crossing into our town. ** THE END ** |
