Iowa 2021: [Day 1 - Moraine View SRA] [Day 2 - Geode SP] [Day 3 - Prairie Rose SP] [Day 4 - Ledges SP] [Day 5 - Heading Home]

Sunday, August 22, 2021: We were heading to Iowa and Nebraska, with a swing through Minnesota on the way home (spoiler: we didn't make it to Minnesota). Let's get this show on the road!
But first, we stopped by Claire's group home to deliver a new toy tub. We noticed her old one was damaged when we picked her up last week.
We took the old one with us, hoping that we would find a recycling bin large enough to take it. Stay tuned to see how that turns out!
We passed several corn-fields-partially-turned-into-solar-farms along I-74.
Tom noticed a Class B RV coming up behind us, and sure enough, it was a Hymer Aktiv. Its driver and passenger were checking us out and waved to us as they passed us and we happily waved back.
Our first stop of the day was at the Beef House Restaurant in Covington, Indiana.
What's this?! This isn't the statue that we were expecting. This is one of the Vermillion County giraffes that were auctioned off to raise funds for the community foundation. This one is titled "Yeast Rolls and Ranch Dressing."
This is the statue that we expected. This is one of the 92 "bison-tennial" bison statues that were created to celebrate Indiana's 200th birthday, and we were happy to add this picture to our collection of these statues.
Welcome to Illinois, the Land of Lincoln.
They love their Abraham Lincoln here, and we love that we are in yet another National Heritage Area.
Did you know that corn is grown in the Midwest? No, really.
Lots and lots of corn, and soybeans, and more corn.
This field of sunflowers was a nice change.
We would be staying overnight at Moraine View State Recreation Area.
There was a nice lake, with boaters and kayakers enjoying the water.
We were here for a walk-up site, because you can't register for a camp site online in Illinois less that three days in advance, and we only decided two days ago that we would be starting our trip a day early and staying here.
We drove around the campground to pick our site from those that were not reserved and were currently vacant. Having made our selection, we went back to the check-in to fill out our paperwork.
The first order of business after getting plugged in and set up was to have some refreshments, including ice-cold Diet Cokes (caffeine free, of course!), and a meat stick. Yum!
By 4:00 PM, we were the only occupied site in view, and we were starting to be in the shade.
Dinner was freeze-dried sweet and sour chicken and rice, which went on the list as one of our favorites.
We went for a walk, and saw this beautiful tree with really delicate leaves, almost like a willow, with green nuts or seed pods on its branches.
By 6:30 PM, we were fully in the shade and it was starting to cool off from sweltering to not-so-sweltering. Hooray for our little countertop fan!
We kept the lights low and played cards until it was time to go to bed.
