Minnesota and Wisconsin June 2018:
Day 1 - St. Paul

	Thursday, June 7, 2018: It's time to hit the road!
	We planned to visit Krispy Kreme in the Chicago area to try out their Nutter Butter Cookie Twist donut and Chips Ahoy! Cookie donut, but alas! These fleeting menu items were not on the menu.
	We did snag an Oreos Cookies and Creme donut and a few other treats, and that would have to be good enough.
	For most of the drive up, we listened in fascination to the "Dirty John" podcast. It pained us to pause it while we stopped for some lunch at A&W in Windsor, Wisconsin.
	Ten hours after we left home, we were rolling into St. Paul. There's the Bank with the One at the Top, ...
	... the Minnesota Capitol, ...
	... and the Cathedral of St. Paul.
	There was something new at the Snelling exit where the Midway Shopping Center used to be in Debbie's youth. What is it?
	It's a new soccer stadium called Allianz Field, coming soon.
	On Snelling, we passed old favorite O'Gara's, which would be getting torn down soon and replaced with an apartment building.
	Park Liquors remains largely unchanged.
	We arrived at our home for the next three days, Debbie's alma mater, Macalester College. We were here for a cluster reunion: the classes of 1982, 1983, and 1984 were reuniting at the same time for the class of 1983's 35th reunion.
	We passed the tree planted in honor of classmate Todd Warner '84 four years earlier.
	It now had a plaque next to it.
	Nearby is a tree planted for another classmate, Tim Haviland '82, who was killed in the Twin Towers attack on 9/11. This photos was taken by a classmate because we didn't know about this tree until after the reunion.
	We headed to the Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center, ...
	... to check in for the reunion weekend, ...
	... and get our residence hall room assignment.
	Here's the lovely view of the Weyerhauser Chapel from the second floor of the Campus Center.
	Nearby is a sculpture titled The Sentinel, which was created by Debbie's former professor Don Celender as a gift to the class of 1995. Professor Celender taught at Macalester from 1964 until shortly before his death in 2005.
	The Macalester Rock welcomed us back to campus. It's not the same rock that adorned the campus in Debbie's day (which was still there as recently as 2014), ...
	... but like the previous rock, this one has already been painted and repainted many times, judging from this little unpainted corner.
	With our dorm room keys in hand, we went back to our van and started to move in to 30 Mac.
	It's the small building that connects Wallace Hall with Bigelow Hall, and was best remembered by Debbie's classmates as the building with the laundry in the basement where we used to have Hennepin Avenue parties.
	At some point, it was converted to a dorm, ...
	... and here is our room for the next three nights.
	It was huge and contained the world's sturdiest furniture and the world's tiniest mattresses.
	Linens and towels were provided and we enjoyed a luxurious in-room sink but no bathroom. It is a dorm, after all. We brought along a bathrobe, flip flops, and a small basket for our trips to the shared showers, an experience we haven't missed in the three-plus decades since we had to share a bathroom.
	Our names were on the door, and Debbie added a card from her friend Ken that used to adorn every dorm room door of hers.
	We hopped back into the van at dinner time and headed further south on Snelling, ...
	... past the space-age bus stop with its fancy electronic display and the recently-closed St. Clair Broiler (RIP), ...
	... to Carbone's on Randolph. It had recently expanded and completely remodeled so it was nearly unrecognizable, ...
	... but some things never change, fortunately.
	Oh, yes, the Carbone's Special. We had already dug into it when we remembered to photograph it.
	We were planning on being on the Macalester campus nearly all weekend so we wouldn't have time to see friends, but we made an exception for our Carbone's visit. Jean joined us as she has many times before, but Kristine wasn't able to attend at the last minute.
	After dinner, we drove to Jean's house to check out her amazing gardens (and her husband's fascinating brown truck).
	Her yard looks like a TV crew just finished redecorating it for a before-and-after episode.
	There are plants thriving everywhere, ...
	... with lovely garden accents and a stone path surrounding it all.
	Colorful globes hang over head. It's all just so pretty!
	Back on campus, we took a stroll down Grand Avenue to our next destination. We passed Turck Hall, which was Debbie's first dorm. Her room is no longer there, because they sliced off the end rooms to put this shiny new bank of rooms in its place.
	The Institute for Global Citizenship had just been renamed the Kofi Annan Institute for Global Citizenship, after one of Macalester's most famous alums, the former secretary-general of the United Nations.
	We arrived at Kevin's home for the first of several unofficial reunion parties. We brought along a bottle of Malört as a gift and did a quick shot with our host at the start of the party.
	Ben brought his Washington Capitals t-shirt because the Stanley Cup finals were taking place. Good thing, too, because the Caps ended up winning it all later that evening.
	Speaking of t-shirts, Debbie wore her Schilling Cider t-shirt to help serve as a nametag of sorts, ...
	... while Kevin modeled the t-shirt he created just for the weekend. Front: Macalester College 82-83-84 Cluster Fuss.
	Back: I felt the warm embrace of the fuss! Of course, we had to buy one, and Kevin's stack of 40+ shirts sold out by the end of the weekend.
	Bruce swapped us a Minnesota beer for one of the Indiana brews we brought along.

	Meanwhile, our hosts, Kevin and Seika, were busy at work putting on a huge spread of food.

	Inside, classmates were mixing up margaritas.
	Outside, classmates were catching up with each other.
