Sunday, August 13, 1978: We probably stayed in a motel somewhere, but that detail is lost to time. The next morning, we were heading south to Goosenecks State Park in southern Utah. In the olden days, there was no such thing as a panorama photo, so we had to take multiple photos and try to line them up. Here is one such masterpiece. |

I was a daredevil back then and loved to sit or stand on the edge of cliffs. These days, not so much. When Tom and I visited the Goosenecks in November 2017, we were going to recreate this photo but didn't have the nerve to hike down to the location where this was taken. |

We neared the Utah-Arizona border and entered Monument Valley. This was another shot we recreated in 2017. Shown here from left to right are: Stagecoach, Big Indian, and Sentinel Mesa. |

Nearly four decades later, the pipes are long gone but the roadside viewpoint is still there. |

We arrived in Page, Arizona and checked into the Page Boy Motel. My brother, Doug, and I headed to the pool. |

That evening, we went down to the courtyard to get acquainted with the crew (Tony, Hoss, Janet, Byron, and Alzado), our fellow passengers, and facts of river running. We all walked away from the meeting with stacks of Sanderson postcards ("Take them, they're free!"), a Sanderson t-shirt each, glasses guards for Dad, a river map for Dad, and even more postcards. Here's one of them. |

This postcard is of Hermit Rapid. After the orientation, we headed back to our rooms to pack our ammo cans and wet bags with what we'd bring down the river. |

My ammo can contained the essentials: "Real Bronze" Cutex nail polish, my cup, postcards and stamps, camera, paperbacks, and personal items. I was all set to see the sights on the postcards. |
