Sunday, August 20, 1978: It is now almost 40 years later, and even though I had written an entire novel of the trip up to this point, all I have written about the final days of the trip are a list of notes meant to jog my 15-year-old mind that I never got around to finish writing. Here's breakfast the morning of our last day. That's me in the lower right with my head down. |
We traveled from Mile 198 to Mile 225. At around Mile 222, ... |
... we could see Diamond Peak in the distance, serving as a landmark for the end of our trip. |
Diamond Creek was just a little bit downriver from Diamond Peak, so it was time to say goodbye to the river. We had lunch here and just a little bit more fun in the water. |
A Sanderson truck was there waiting to load up wet bags, cots, and equipment. |
The boats were deflated, one pontoon at a time, and rolled up for transport. |
It took a small army to load the steel portion of the boat onto the truck. |
We were transported to a nearby motel to stay overnight, with all of us gathering for a dinner in the motel restaurant for our final evening together. After some research, I determined that we stayed at the Grand Canyon Caverns Inn, because I vaguely recall visiting some caverns. We visited it in 2018 and confirmed it with this photo of the motel that matches the photo taken the next morning.
