Monday, August 21, 1978: The next morning, we were all clean and freshly clothed, including our crew. They posed for a group photo at the motel before we all went our separate ways.
Our trip package included a flight back to Page and we flew out of the Grand Canyon Caverns Airport. The pointy hill in this photo helped me identify this airport.
We boarded this small airplane and flew through the Grand Canyon, covering by air in a short time what it took us a week to cover by boat.
We headed toward the South Rim. At this position, Hermit's Rest was likely straight ahead of us.
Looking north, here's a glimpse of the river. That's Boucher Rapid down there at Mile 96.5.
Looking south, this is the view from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch at Mile 88.
Here's a closer look at the Phantom Ranch area. The Kaibab Suspension Bridge is hidden from view just to the left of the glimpse of river. The green valley containing the ranch is visible in the lower center - look for the patch of trees.
Here's the South Rim from Grand Canyon Village on the far right almost to Grandview Point on the left.
That's Horn Creek Rapid at Mile 91.5.
Out the left side of the plane, facing north, we could see Cape Royal on the North Rim. That circle on the rim is the Cape Royal parking lot.
To the right below us was the mouth of the Little Colorado at Mile 61.5.
From this vantage point, the difference was very obvious between the aqua water of the Little Colorado and the dark green of the Colorado.
Here's the canyon's edge across from Kwagunt Creek at Mile 56.
The view on the right shows the start of Marble Canyon just north of Little Nankoweap Creek at Mile 52.
Here's a look back downstream to Cave Spring Rapid and our first night's camp just upstream from it at Mile 25.
Here's the stretch of river downstream from Tanner Wash at Mile 15.
Up ahead is Navajo Bridge at Mile 4.
Here's Marble Canyon Lodge at the junction of 89A and Lees Ferry Road.
Here's a closer look at Navajo Bridge on 89A. It had been a week since we had floated underneath it.
Here's an overview of the Lees Ferry area, ...
... and here's a closer look. You can see boats in the water, waiting to embark on a new adventure.
As we neared Page, we got a nice look at the Glen Canyon Dam.
Here's the little town of Page.
The flight and the trip ended too soon. The experience was so wonderful that we did it again two years later. From Page, we drove down to the Phoenix area to visit my mother's parents.
