Tuesday, July 29, 1980: Here are Kathy and me early the next morning. I'm wearing my Sanderson river rat pin. |

Mom and Dad were all smiles. |

There was an ugly contest among the men, who were all sporting week-long whiskers. From left to right: Jack, Othon, Dale, Steve, and Tom. Jack is Steve's dad. |

Here's Doug and the tent that housed Oscar, the toilet. |

Of course, the river was also handy to use as a toilet. |

We had a long way to travel this day so we got an early start loading up the boats. |
 |
The last miles of the canyon are bittersweet. There are very few rapids and entering Lake Mead ahead means that civilization is upon us. Check out that Fred's Liquor Store t-shirt on Kitch. |

Next, we boarded a speedboat that would take us through the last fifty miles or so down the canyon to Temple Bar Marina in Lake Mead. |

We boarded a plane at the Temple Bar Airport and flew back to Page. This is a view of South Cove (near the mouth of the Colorado, upper left) on Lake Mead where we exited the river in 2006. |

Our flight took us over Lees Ferry. That's Glen Canyon in the background. |

From this vantage point, it's easy to see the dividing line where Glen Canyon (on the left) ends and Marble Canyon rises out of the ground across the river from Lees Ferry. |

As we approached Page, we got a nice view of the Glen Canyon Dam looking west, with the little town of Page in the upper left. We got another impressive view of it 27 years later. |

We landed at the Page airport and got a ride back to the Sanderson Building, where we retrieved our car and went inside for a bit to chat with the staff. |
 |
After we left the Sanderson building (shown here in a photo from their original brochure), we went to the Taco Bell drive-through. Ahead of us in line was Byron, one of our guides from our 1978 trip. From the guides on our current trip, we had heard that he had bought a shiny new red RX-7, and there it was in front of us. So I got out, knocked on his window, and had a nice little five-minute reunion with him. |

Wednesday, July 30, 1980: The only other photo from this trip is a single photo of Mount Rushmore, so apparently we went there on the drive back. ** THE END ** |
