Saturday, June 29, 2013: We loaded up our trusty minivan and left Indy at the crack of dawn. We were in Kentucky well before lunch time and got the first of many "Welcome to <insert state here>" signs of the trip.
Here's the Louisville skyline as we crossed the Indiana-Kentucky border.
Knowing that we'd be visiting numerous famous colleges, we snapped this photo of the University of Louisville as we sped by.
Kentucky offers the famous Bourbon Trail, and an exit sign enticed us to take a 20 minute visit of the trail -- just long enough to drive to the Jim Beam Distillery and buy some bourbon, jerky, and pralines at the gift shop before continuing our trip south.
In Bowling Green, Kentucky, we stopped outside the Corvette Museum ...
... and got a picture of Flat Orchy in front of the unique building. Flat Orchy is the flat version of our beloved mascot Orchy, and just for this year, he's travelling with us.
"Tennessee - The Volunteer State - Welcomes You."
A vacation features three meals a day, and you have to make each one count, so we got some fast lunch at Zaxby's, a staple of the South that hadn't quite made it to Indianapolis yet.
Oh, man, that was delicious. Debbie's meal was tiny chicken sandwiches on tiny buns that were buttered and toasted to perfection.
We passed Nashville and waved in the direction of Vanderbilt University.
Maersk! Just one of many of Tom's wins on the trip.
There's a short stretch of road that dips into Georgia, back up into Tennessee (here by Knoxville), ...
... and then back into Georgia again. "Welcome. We're glad Georgia's on your mind. Georgia - Site of the 1996 Olympic Games."
We rolled into Atlanta around 4:00 and headed to the Atlanta Food Truck Park.
We ordered a chicken tikka masala naan wrap from Masala Fresh, ...
... a banh mi meatball (pork with sriracha mayo, carrot daikon salad, and spices) from Mighty Meatballs, ...
... and washed it down with a tasty bubble tea from the Bubble Tea Truck. We also picked up some praline goodies from Chay J's.
Next, we raced to our hotel in Dunwoody and then made the 30-minute drive out to Suwanee, where Tom's brother Ken lives. Here's adorable Jena showing off her American Girl doll.
We had a great time playing Apples to Apples with Juliet, Jack, Ken, and Jena.
We were sent on our way with goodbyes from Juliet, Ken, Isabelle, and Pablo.
Goodbye, Suwanee! |
