Southern USA 2013: [Day 1: Atlanta] [Day 2: Atlanta] [Day 3: Orlando] [Day 4: KSC] [Day 5: Wellington] [Day 6: Jekyll Island] [Day 7: Chapel Hill] [Day 8: Raleigh] [Day 9: West Virginia]

Friday, July 5, 2013: We departed Jekyll Island nice and early.
We drove back over the bridge, ...
... rode along the tide flats, ...
... and crossed the Sidney Lanier Bridge to head north.
Here's the view from the bridge looking out to the ocean.
The closest McDonald's was located in Brunswick, so we had a quick stop before moving on.
"Wecome to South Carolina. Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places."
South Carolina is so genteel, she has entry gates.
Halfway through South Carolina, we crossed Lake Marion.
Shortly after that, we arrived in Manning, S.C., which is "Matchless For Beauty And Hospitality."
We headed to D&H Barbecue where we discovered that South Carolina barbecue is very heavily vinegar-flavored.
Fortunately, there were non-barbecue tasty offerings on the lunch buffet including delicious fried chicken, and banana pudding and pecan pie for dessert.
Maersk!
Up the road in Florence, we loaded up on South Carolina food souvenirs including juices, deep-fried peanuts, pralines, boiled peanuts, and pecan oil. It was great to be travelling by vehicle instead of plane, so we could load up the van with whatever goodies we found.
"Welcome to North Carolina." No slogan. Just welcome.
We arrived in Chapel Hill, checked in at the security gate at Debbie's first-cousin-once-removed Paul's neighborhood, and made it down the very steep driveway to his home.
Paul and Judi's dogs, Bailey and Baxter, joined Judi in welcoming us as we awaited the arrival of Paul, Molly, and Amanda.
Amanda had plans in Raleigh and was unable to join us, but Molly was a lovely co-host, shown here with her adorable dog, Winston. Molly lives in West Palm Beach so we expected to see her when we visited her mother in Wellington, but it worked out that we got to see her at her father's instead.
Paul and Judi cooked us a delicious steak dinner and we had a great time catching up.
After dinner, we went for a drive to see the area. We drove to nearby Bynum and stopped in front of the home of Clyde Jones, a famous local artist ...
... who creates these colorful folk art animals that adorn the yards of nearly every home in the neighborhood. We brought out Orchy to pose with the animals.
We passed a group of deer scampering by, ...

... and saw a herd of Belted Galloway cows, noted for their distinctive black and white markings. Unfortunately, the lighting at dusk meant that the cow in this photo is barely visible, but he's there.
