Saturday, February 20, 2021: After a perfectly pleasant night of very cold temps again, we awoke to sunrise out our back window.
We headed to the restroom nice and early, before coming back and having a delicious breakfast of Winchell's donuts and leftover Black-eyed Pea.
The sky was completely clear. Those swirly clouds through the skylight were leftover suds from the car wash the day before.
We were on our way out of camp by 8:00 AM.
There was lots of pretty scenery as we drove north.
Welcome to Wyoming! The Ocho's eleventh state!
As soon as we crossed the border, Wyoming's pronghorns showed up to add to the scenery.
Maersk! This was Tom's find.
As we passed Cheyenne, Tom noticed the capitol building and Debbie remembered that it was under renovation the last time we were here in 2016, so we got a new photo of it.
The same was true of Wyoming's Merci Train boxcar, so we went to get a new photo of it too. We were happy to see how great it looks since its renovation in 2017 and even happier to see that a wheelchair lift had been installed for accessibility.
Here's the back of the car.
We got propane at Tractor Supply while we were in town.
We passed these rockets at the entrance to F. E. Warren Air Force Base when we returned to I-70.
We stopped at Tree Rock. This tree has been growing out of a crevice in this rock since before the Union Pacific Railroad built its original main line fifty feet south of this rock in 1868. We had been here in 2016 and copied this caption directly from that travelog.
There's Vedauwoo, a rocky playground we had visited in 2016 as well.
We passed through Medicine Bow National Forest.
We stopped at the rest area that featured the statue of Abraham Lincoln's giant head, last seen in 2016.
Since we carry our own bathroom, we didn't really need to stop, but it was perfect timing for Tom to watch a rocket launch online while Debbie enjoyed the view from the parking lot. At the exact second of the rocket launch, Debbie's phone rang. It was the Perry KOA calling about tonight's reservation and to tell us that we had been upgraded to the front of the park.
Wyoming is such a beautiful state.
There's scenery around every bend; even these endless rows of snow block fences are pretty.
The weather alternated between cloudy and partly cloudy, with the occasional 15-minute snowfall as well.
When we passed the town of Sinclair, Wyoming, it suddenly made sense why there were Sinclair gas stations everywhere out here.
This is where they make Sinclair gas.
When we got near Rawlins, we realized that the prison we had visited in 2016 was a National Historic Place, so we added it to our travel collection list.
We found a Taco John's in Rawlins and were overjoyed to see that The Ocho would be able to go through the drive-thru.
Oh, happy day! Debbie had bought some small fast food-style plastic trays for the RV and we used two of them to eat food in the front seats. Food is balanced, crumbs are caught, and life is good.
We crossed the Continental Divide shortly after 1:00 PM, ...
... and then again, less than an hour later. Things that make you go Hmmmmm.
What do you think? Snow up ahead?
A few minutes later, the skies were blue again.
More pretty scenery, ...
... and more, ...
... and more ... TUNNEL! ...
... and more.
We crossed the Green River near the town of Green River, Wyoming, knowing that we'd see it again in Green River, Utah, three days later.
It was windy out and the light dusting of new, powdery snow drifted over the road constantly.
We followed the transcontinental railroad through most of Wyoming. There are some tracks next to a stream right below us ...
... as we drove through the town of Dunmar, Wyoming. Why take this particular picture? Because ...
... we own a pen from Best Western Dunmar Inn and have no idea how it got to us, but this is where its journey started.
Welcome to Utah - The Ocho's twelfth state!
More train tracks ...
... and more trains.
These Auto Tour signs are small and difficult to photograph, but we kept trying. From top to bottom are: California Trail, Mormon Pioneer, and Pony Express.
The route was slowly starting to descend.
Still beautiful.
If we were glad to be nearly done with the mountains, imagine how happy people along the California, Mormon, or Pony Express trails felt!
Still, beauty was everywhere.
We continued to follow the valleys, rivers, and the railroad tracks.
The geology of the mountains is fascinating - different levels of sedimentary rock pushed together to create mountains.
Getting closer, ...
... Finally! The Great Salt Lake!
We made it to the Brigham City / Perry South KOA Journey, ...
... not long before sunset. We had been upgraded to a spot at the front of the park where it was much more crowded but at least we had a clear view of the sunset.
Pretty.
We also had a small view of the mountains, and a full view of the motorhome next to us, which had "No Trespassing" and "Keep Out" signs on it. The occupants went out for the evening around 7:00 PM. We'll have more on that story in the morning.
Dinner was a rice and broccoli side dish made in our hotpot, with diced ham and orange bell peppers added, plus leftover apples from the Black-eyed Pea.
