Saturday, March 5: At 5:30 AM, the bellman came to fetch us and our luggage in the silent electric cart.
We checked out of the hotel, dropped off the rental car, and checked in at the airport. We ate our only McDonald's food of the trip at the tiny McDonald's stand with a very limited breakfast menu.
We chose a panini (left) and a club sandwich (right), but the Croque McDo (ham and cheese toasted sandwich) looked pretty tempting too.
The security line wasn't very long, but we did get chosen for an extensive search and explosives screening. Fortunately, we were clean. We waited for our flight to depart in a beautiful open-air lounge.
We got our last glimpse of Tahiti as we boarded the plane.
However, the vacation wasn't over! We had to cross from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5 at LAX, so we allowed ourselves a quick stopover at Encounter Restaurant, located in the iconic building smack in the middle of the airport.
It is colorful and unusual inside, and offers fantastic views of LAX at night.
We each had an expensive cocktail ($9.25 each), but they were strong, and after Tahitian prices, they didn't seem all that expensive.
Gaze upon the awesomeness of this restaurant, ...
... and the equally awesome ladies' room.
Our redeye flight to Detroit was packed with two large groups of passengers: a bunch of retirees freshly back from a package tour to Hawaii, and the entire University of Michigan lacrosse team. The former talked amongst themselves and to any seatmates who might listen, while the latter all played a few games of seatback trivia, effectively lighting up the cabin with an eery blue glow.
We joined in and dominated (Debbie = WINNER, Tom = TOMMMY). Our only real competition was FOWWLR, one of the few players with a somewhat appropriate user name.
We landed in Detroit to a frozen landscape, which was a huge temperature shock.

Detroit has had our favorite airport for several years now, but with the addition of power towers every few rows of seats, it doesn't look possible for any other airport to ever topple it from Number One. After a multi-hour layover, we took one last flight to Indy and were home again.
