Day 9 - Heading Home |
![]() |
Saturday, January 30, 2021: It was still dark and no one was in the office yet when we quietly drove away at 6:30 AM. |
![]() |
An hour later, we were in Missouri, ... |
![]() |
... and an hour or so after that, we were crossing the mighty Mississippi ... |
![]() |
... into Illinois. |
![]() |
A curbside pickup McDonald's lunch was followed an hour later by reaching the Indiana state line. We were racing a snowy storm front and we could see the front of it ahead of us, so we were winning. |

Welcome to Indy! |

It was 3:30 PM when we dropped off our beautiful but filthy The Ocho at the storage facility. |
![]() |
We had traveled to five new states on this trip, so we updated the states on our new United States map. |
![]() |
Tom took a photo of the trip information before we left the storage facility. Total miles driven: 2978. Average miles per gallon: 15.5. From here, we headed home and arrived ten minutes before a winter storm warning went into effect. |

Our story would end here but you're probably wondering how that test launch went. When we got home, there were still two Starships in the launching area. |
![]() |
The South Padre Island livestreams were still going. We were able to take this screenshot ... |
![]() |
... and figure out where it was being broadcast from, using a photo we had taken at Isla Blanca State Park two days earlier. That satellite dish on the balcony gives it away. |

But it would still be another three days before the launch finally happened on February 2, which made us very happy that we had decided to leave when we did.
** THE END ** |
