Sunday, January 22, 2023: It had rained on and off overnight, and the tent performed beautifully. We slept in and made our second favorite freeze-dried meal, Breakfast Skillet from Mountain House, for breakfast. We took our time getting going, and then packed up and got on the road around 10 AM.
We weren't going very far today, and two hours later we were at our first stop: Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City.
LEGO! The Oklahoma City LEGO Store was the first of many on this trip.
We admired all of the models in the window before we went in.
Debbie waited patiently to get at the Pick & Build wall, filling just one small cup this time. There will be eleven, yes eleven, more LEGO stores to visit before we get home, and she didn't want to peak too soon.
The new minifigs were out, and this store didn't have a build-your-own minifig station.
They had a display with all of the possible figures pre-built, and you could specify which three you wanted.
The also had some other variations pre-built for you to choose. Debbie decided that she would wait until a later store to get minifigs and left with just the small Pick & Build cup and another stamp for her LEGO passport.
We headed to the food court for lunch at Oh K-Dog and Egg Toast. These are Korean street food hot dogs, which are like corn dogs but wrapped in a rice-based batter rather than corn. Debbie ordered the Potato Mozza Dog and Tom ordered the Sweet Potato Mozza Dog.
This location didn't have egg toast, so we didn't figure out what that was. We thought about the beautiful matcha donuts for a while but decided against them.
After a few minutes, our number was called and we picked up our orders. The server rolled them in brown sugar before serving them. Tom's is on the left, and Debbie's is on the right.
They were enormous, and it took us a few bites to realize that the Mozza Dog didn't have any hot dog. The center was a large stick of mozzarella cheese. They were delicious, but there was no hot dog goodness. It was right there in the name.
Back in the van, Debbie took a minute to admire the pack job in the Pick & Build cup, ...
... and then we headed to the Walmart next door to pick up a few things. There was a snowstorm headed our way, and Tom realized that he hadn't put the ice scraper in the van before we left home. You can be sure that that'll go on the packing list when we get home. We also picked up a second space heater to help combat the sub-freezing overnight temperatures coming up.
Our shopping complete, we headed south, checking out the bison artwork on the soundproofing wall along the highway, ...
... and the beautiful buildings in downtown Oklahoma City.
Moore, Oklahoma, is the home of country music star Toby Keith, ...
... and they aren't shy about telling you.
Our next stop was in Norman, Oklahoma, at the J.D. McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. We talked to the guard at the gate, who was happy to let us in to see ...
... Oklahoma's Merci Train boxcar. It was in fantastic shape, looking like it had been repainted very recently and all of the provincial shields looked brand new.
The back side didn't have any shields on it, but it was in perfect condition. We love it when the boxcars are obviously lovingly maintained.
We headed southwest out of Oklahoma City, and just before 3 PM we came across an intense fire right by the side of the road. The surprisingly thick band of smoke came from someone burning their field right by the highway.
The weather had cleared up and it was very sunny as we got near our next destination. Check out those beautiful mountains in the distance.
Our next stop was at the City of Lawton Lawtonka Campground in Lawton, Oklahoma. We had trouble finding enough information about their campgrounds online, and after finding only 50 amp service at the East Campground, we stopped in at their offices to see if they had other options. The park manager was extremely helpful and suggested the Robinson's Landing campground.
It was only a short distance away at the north end of Lake Lawtonka.
The park manager had said that sites 16 through 20 were the best ones, and we agreed, happily taking site 17. Even though it was still in the 40s, we opened the windows and left off the rainfly to take advantage of the beautiful weather.
Who's a happy boy?
The day was perfect, and we sat in the tent and played on our phones and talked and soaked up the sunshine.
We made Spicy Sausage Pasta for dinner, ...
... and when the sun went down, we put on the rainfly, closed the windows, and cranked up the space heaters. The temperature was going to be in the 20s overnight, but our two space heaters did a great job of keeping the tent at a comfortable temperature.
We listened to coyotes howling in the distance, a great horned owl hooting nearby, and played several rounds of Scrabble on our phones before bundling up and getting into our beds around 11 PM.
