US-50 East 2022: [Day 1 - Pennsylvania] [Day 2 - Home] [Day 3 - Pennsylvania Again] [Day 4 - Delaware] [Day 5 - Virginia] [Day 6 - Ohio] [Day 7 - Heading Home]

Thursday, September 22, 2022: There were deer grazing in the park as we left the campsite just after sunrise.
We made our way back to US-50 at the exact point we had left it the day before and started our final leg of this trip.
Before we reached Hillsboro, we had to detour south for a road closure. We try to drive every mile of the designated road, but sometimes things are out of our control.
It seemed like forever, but the detour only lasted for eight miles, and then we were in Hillsboro, where we grabbed breakfast at McDonald's and continued westward.
Here's another US-50-themed business: The 50 Freeze Dairy Bar just west of Hillsboro.
As we reached the outskirts of Cinncinnati, we realized we were back in the land of Frisch's Big Boy.
We drove through the quaint town of Mariemont, past the Mariemont Inn, which looked like a Swiss chalet, ...
... and then right down the street was another Frisch's. Well, not just another one. This is the very first one, opened in 1939 as the Mainliner restaurant, named after the first tri-motor passenger airplane, hence the airplane on the sign. In 1946, the Mainliner restaurant acquired the necessary license to be part of the "Big Boy" hamburger chain, and starting the Frisch's Big Boy restaurant chain.
As we reached the area near the Ohio River, the highway became a walled boulevard, ...
... taking us through the historic Pendleton neighborhood, ...
... before forcing us onto a section of I-71 which took us right by ...
... Riverfront Stadium, home of the Cinncinnati Reds.
We love it when the US-50 logo is painted right on the road.
We exited the interstate and drove along the Ohio River again, ...
... past the Route 50 Saloon, ...
... until we reached the town of Cleves. Here we pulled off into a parking lot just before 10 AM and had our annual insurance review meeting with our agent's assistant, Sharon.
Fifteen minutes later, confident in our insurance coverage, we were back on the road. US-50 was an Ohio Byway, ...
... part of the Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway, ...
... and part of the Ohio River Scenic Byway. Whew! That's a lot of byways.
Welcome to Indiana!
We picked up the designation "Indiana's Historic Pathways" to add to US-50, ...
... and were surprised to see that this was part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Auto Tour Route. We knew, well, Tom knew that Lewis had started the journey somewhere on the Ohio River before meeting up with Clark near Louisville, Kentucky, but it hadn't occurred to us that the Lewis and Clark Trail was anywhere near Cinncinnati.
This sign for a drive-through liquor store gets right to the point: Whiskey Cold Beer To Go.
This ice cream shop was named Flavors, but gave no outward indication of just how many flavors they may have.
Here's another US-50 themed business: US-50 Business Park. Simple and to the point. You've got where and what right there in the name.
In Versailles, Indiana, we were briefly on the Michigan Road Historic Byway, one of Indiana's earliest highways. It was built in the 1830's to connect the Ohio River to Indianapolis and on to Lake Michigan.
Just outside of Seymour, Indiana, we briefly stopped at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, ...
... before reaching the end of this part of the trip. We were going to take I-65 north, but we needed to head just a little further west so that when we continued the trip to Sacramento nine days later, we would be able to pick up exactly where we left off without backtracking.
This mural just west of I-65 would serve as the perfect landmark when we continued our journey.
We had travelled 828.9 miles so far, with 2,244.1 miles to go. To be continued ...

** THE END **
