Sunday, October 16, 2022: We were eager to be home, and we had another very long driving day ahead of us, so we packed up quickly and were on the road well before sunrise. It was still fully dark when we drove past the Skydance Bridge in Oklahoma City, ...
... and then this colorful Ferris wheel that we just couldn't get our camera to focus on.
We stopped at a McDonald's for breakfast before leaving Oklahoma City, and made our way to Tulsa, where we finally got a picture of the Golden Driller Statue. We should have gotten a picture of this 75-foot tall statue of an oil worker we drove Route 66 last year, but we didn't and have regretted it ever since.
The Expo Center where the statue is located is a beautiful building and looks like it is brand new.
We stopped at a rest area and couldn't resist the ampersand-shaped donuts at Kum & Go, ...
... and filled out a half-dozen to take with us. Check out the ampersand-shaped glazed donut in the upper left corner.
An hour later we were in Missouri, ...
... and stopped at the Welcome Center. This one had a bunch of Route 66-themed stuff, ...
... including a map of Route 66 on the floor, ...
... neon Men and Women signs over the entrances to the bathrooms, and a light-up Route 66 clock. Well done, Missouri.
Shortly after noon, we drove through an area that had grass fires in several places on the north side of the road, ...
... with crews working to put them out with varying degrees of success.
Less than an hour later, Google Maps routed us off the highway for a giant traffic back-up ahead, ...
... and we were able to avoid about 30 minutes of stop-and-go traffic. When your navigation system tells you to get off the road, you listen.
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis was beautiful in the afternoon sun, ...
... and we were very happy to be in Illinois, only one state away from home.
In East St. Louis, Illinois, we noticed an exit for Barack Obama Avenue. We wondered if everyone noticed the difference in font between the new street name and the rest of the sign, or if it was just us.
Just after 5 PM, eleven hours after leaving camp this morning, we were back home again in Indiana. It would still be 90 minutes before we were home, but it always brings a smile to our faces to return to our adopted home state after a long road trip.

** THE END **
