Friday, May 21, 2021: We didn't have a long driving day ahead of us so we didn't leave until 9 AM or so.
We drove through the small town of Arco, Idaho, where they were also following the apparently new tradition of publishing their high school seniors' portraits on streetlamps. But the really interesting thing was on the mountains overlooking town ...
... where two-digit years had been carved or painted on them, most likely representing the high school class from that year. Since there were some numbers in the 20s already on it, upcoming classes will definitely need to use four-digit years to avoid duplication. The classes of 2000 and 2001 had already figured this out.
This was the first time we had seen a byway sign that wasn't described as scenic. Hmmm.
It wasn't fascinating, but it was scenic enough.
Especially this butte covered with cell towers. Who doesn't love to see that?
We had been driving through Idaho National Laboratory land but failed to get a photo of one of the signs until we were leaving - just in time.
Even after an hour of driving, lava fields were still visible.
It was sunny when we arrived in Idaho Falls.
The falls were just as beautiful as they had been the last time we were here in 2005.
That's the Snake River creating those pretty falls.
Up the river, we could see the Idaho Falls Temple gleaming in the sun. The Mormons do know how to build pretty white churches.
We went to Salt Lake City-based chain Arctic Circle for lunch. With 26 locations in Idaho, it felt like our destiny.
Tom ordered the Black Angus Bacon and Cheddar burger, while Debbie had the halibut and fries. We also got the world's largest basket of tater tots and a huge stack of fry sauce cups.
Just down the street was this water-and-sculpture extravaganza in the middle of a roundabout.
We passed this alpaca farm on our way out of town.
Pretty scenery.
We were following the Snake River once again.
We entered Targhee National Forest as we started into the mountains.
Welcome to Wyoming! The Ocho had already been here two months earlier so it didn't count as a new state.
As we drove further up into the mountains, the sun disappeared and we were at the level of the clouds. By now, it was raining.
As we got near Jackson, Wyoming, we saw the first of two of these reflective moose outlines, placed to help prevent moose deaths along Highway 390.
After making it over the mountains, we met the Snake River again, which had taken a longer, flatter route.
We were rolling into Jackson when we realized that our rig was leaking again, in the exact same spot that we had been fighting leaks the entire trip. By now, we knew the drill: get things off the shelf, put out the towels, feel bad about life.
We passed a painted bison statue. It appears to have been part of a collection from long ago, but the Internet cannot tell us when. But you can buy a whole set of stock photos of these as long as you don't care to know anything more about them.
Jackson (AKA Jackson Hole) was crowded and rainy, so we just drove through it briefly.
There's the stuffed bison and store where we photographed Jill when we were here in 2005.
There's a cool neon sign for the Cowboy Bar on the Jackson town square.
The square features arches of antlers on all four corners. This is the one where Jill and Tom posed for a picture in 2005.
The vintage Teton Theater has been turned into a pizza restaurant.
We passed the National Elk Refuge but didn't see any elk.
We entered Grand Teton National Park.
We were following the Gros Ventre River on our way to our campground.
But we drove past the campground entrance a couple of miles to the small town of Kelly, Wyoming.
We have to admit that the only reason we were here was to see signs with our granddaughter's name on them. Here is one ...
... and here is another.
We backtracked to the entrance to Gros Ventre campground.
Signs implored us to be Bear Aware. We were reminded again when we checked into the campground. Tom stayed on high alert.
We got to our campsite and got settled in. Here's the view to the left, ...
... out the front window, ...
... to the right, ...
... and out the back door. The Gros Ventre River was back behind our campsite a short distance.
We treated ourselves to our favorite freeze-dried dinner, spaghetti with meat sauce.
After heavy rain for an hour brought more leaking, Tom headed outside to try once again to fix the problem. He donned a disposable poncho and got out some of the many tubes of sealant we bought in Billings.
Tom inspected the pop top and channel ...
... and Debbie got a picture of him working on the rig for at least the sixth time this trip. He came up with a brilliant idea of putting the front tires on blocks, so that water wouldn't run toward the front and leak. That worked very well.
Rain came and went, and at one point, we even had a little bit of hail, so now we can say that The Ocho has experienced every kind of weather. It was very tiny hail, as you can see in this picture of the sun roof.
After a long dreary day, we went to bed early, while every towel and washcloth stood by to catch any leaking that might happen overnight.
