Wednesday, April 10, 2024: While sitting at our kitchen table having breakfast, Debbie asked Tom if he wanted to drive to South Texas to have a look at the SpaceX launch facility there. After a few minutes of thinking, Tom said that he did. A few hours later, after draining the spa, tidying up the house, finishing the laundry, and hurriedly packing and loading the van, we were driving away in the rain. We hadn't decided how far we were going to drive today, just that we would try to go as far as we could.
We saw our first eclipse-themed billboard of the trip before we had driven more than 30 minutes.
Burger King in Brazil, Indiana, was both a pit stop and our food choice for an early dinner, ...
... followed a short while later by crossing the Illinois State Line.
It continued to rain as we crossed Illinois and drove on into Missouri.
As we drove, Debbie attended a virtual PMSF gathering that included a screening of "Makayla's Voice," a film about a fifteen-year-old girl with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome who has learned to use a letterboard to communicate. During the film, her speech therapist mentioned the iOS app LAMP Words for Life as a communication tool that Makayla had used before becoming proficient with the letterboard, so Debbie made a note of it for our Claire, who also has Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.
After driving for more than six hours in constant rain, we stopped for the night at Motel 6 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. It was a solid first day, especially considering our late start, and the fact that we took a different route than usual this time. We had come south on I-57 through Illinois toward Memphis, rather than our usual western route though St. Louis and Tulsa, letting us see parts of the country that we hadn't seen for a while, which is always good.
