Saturday, January 21, 2023: We were eager to get started on this trip and today's drive would be a long one, with more than 600 miles to our destination. We were on the road by 7:30 AM, headed west. |
It's been a while since we traveled west from Indianapolis on I-70 and we were surprised that there was no "Welcome to Illinois" sign after we crossed the state line. We stopped at a rest area near Marshall, Illinois, and decided that the banners hanging from the lampposts were welcome enough. |
We crossed into Missouri around 11:30 AM, ... |
... and saw the Gateway Arch in its full glory under a clear blue sky. |
Around noon, we stopped in Eureka, Missouri, and saw this cone-shaped mailbox for a Spooners Frozen Custard shop on our way ... |
... to White Castle for lunch. Sure, we have White Castle at home, but since we were headed southwest on this trip, there was a limited amount of time before all of the White Castles disappeared. At least, that was our justification. |
The rain started just before 3PM and was flying off our freshly Rain-Xed windshield as we ... |
... got to Oklahoma. |
Our destination for today was the Will Rogers Downs KOA Journey in Claremore, Oklahoma. |
The rain had stopped before we arrived, and we had plenty of daylight left to get our tent set up. |
We watched sunset in comfort, ... |
... with our full-sized camp chairs and our new, larger table. Our tent is so awesome, and we absolutely love being in it. We relaxed for a while, had our favorite freeze-dried meal for dinner (Spaghetti with Meat Sauce from Mountain House), and went to sleep early after the long driving day.
