Saturday, November 26, 2016: Mileage: 2770; departure time: 6:40 AM.
We headed back in to Pella, not slowing down even for a photo of this windmill that welcomes visitors to town.
Our first stop was Vander Ploeg Bakery on the square, which we didn't photograph this time. We bought honey wheat rolls and ...
... two Dutch letters, both of which were in the shape of the letter "S" as is the tradition. We managed to make it home before photographing and consuming them. They were delicious, almond-filled pastries and we should have bought a few hundred of them. Regrets, people.
Then we went to Jaarsma Bakery just down the block.
We entered their gift shop section next door first where we selected a box of Cheese Crispies for our daughter, ...
... plus an angel food cake, Dutch rusks (dried, sliced rolls), and both cream- and fruit-filled Bismarcks. Self-control? We have none.
At 6:50 AM, the sun still wasn't up yet, but ...
... as far as we were concerned, it was, indeed, Tulip Time.
On our way out of town, we passed the huge Vermeer Windmill, ...
... plus the historical village. Obviously, it wasn't open yet but we really wanted to get home so we didn't stick around until opening time.
Here's the schmancy Royal Amsterdam Hotel in Pella.
The courtyard features a canal to give the ambience of Amsterdam's canals.
Yes, this is the origin of all of the Pella Windows and Doors junk mail we receive, despite several attempts to get off of their mailing list.
We call this masterpiece, "Dawn Over Iowa."
We decided that Casey's General Store is the ABC Store of Iowa, because it seems like there's one on every block. (Don't get this reference? Visit Waikiki and you'll understand.)
We had our last Taco John's breakfast before returning to our home where no Taco John's exist anywhere. Those breakfast burritos are the best.
Look at this adorable house! It's located on an island with a small bridge connecting itself to civilization.
We prepared to cross ...
... the mighty Mississippi River ...
... at the Iowa-Illinois border.
This seemed like a good time to eat those Bismarcks we had bought at Jaarsma Bakery earlier in the day.
Late in the morning, we passed through Peoria, Illinois, again, ...
... and decided that it might be a nice destination for a long weekend someday.
But we probably won't go on the riverboat because we just aren't gamblers.
By 12:30 PM, we were in Indiana, where the rest areas are just average but where the world's most comfortable house and bed are located.

Mileage: 3207; arrival time: 2:55 PM. It's good to be home.
