Review
When Laura and I finished our first house concert and decided to turn
it into a series, Edie Carey was our first choice to perform, and we were
fortunate enough to have her perform for us. Edie's manager, Matthew Asbell,
suggested adding the very talented Jennifer Marks to the bill, then Edie
made the night even more special by inviting Indiana native Kara Barnard
to join in. It turned out to be a wonderful evening, and we owe it all
to Matthew and Edie for making it happen.
Prior to the show, my daughters were about to leave, because children
are not allowed at our shows, so I asked Edie to sing a song for my girls.
Edie graciously agreed, and Jennifer joined her for an impromptu private
concert of "Fall or Fly" for Jill and Claire. Jill was beaming,
because "Fall or Fly" is one of her favorite songs, and Claire,
who is severely disabled, seemed to thoroughly enjoy it too.
Our second house concert featured a nearly full house of 50 people, including
a row of chairs in the hallway above the main floor that doubles as a
balcony. Jennifer Marks started her set with "High School Reunion,"
a hilarious song that got everyone laughing and in the mood for a great
evening. She sang some beautiful ballads, a song or two of an adult nature
(after she noted that the children of the household were gone for the
evening), and mixed in funny and touching stories about the songs she
performed.
After a short break to get fresh plates of food and beverages, Edie Carey
took the stage. She sang our favorite songs, including "Accidental
Poet," "I Never Thought," and "Disco Ball Heart,"
and added "Middle" when Laura requested it. Her ad libs between
songs had the audience laughing. Edie was joined by Kara Barnard on guitar
and mandolin for several songs, then Jennifer and Kara both joined Edie
for a rousing finale of "Fall or Fly" featuring gorgeous three-part
harmony. (Click here to see the video of the "Fall
or Fly" performance -- it's incredible.)
After autograph signing, the remaining guests spent time with Edie and
Jennifer in the basement, listening to the jukebox, discussing our favorite
performers and finishing off Laura's delicious food.
